Four horse-loving women of the U.S. Virgin Islands joined hearts and minds to create an equine welfare organization that had been missing from the community's fabric. Thoroughbreds regularly are transported to the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix to race at the local track usually after a career in the States. This common event of passing an aging racehorse further and further down island through the Caribbean as it loses its luster often ends abruptly in the V.I. These are the horses VICCTRE finds in need of rescue or retirement, depending on how each one has been handled at its career end.
In lieu of accountability and legislative equine liability created for sport horses in this jurisdiction, VICCTRE has developed a privately funded program for assisting with the best possible retirement options for anyone in the Virgin Islands owning a horse.
On this web site you can read about the 29 deserving horses that VICCTRE cared for during its first three years in operation. Breaking new ground in the territory with a registered 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization devoted to horses has been challenging and exciting. With the hard work of each founding member, their selfless helpers, and generous benefactors, the program has achieved great success with its first goal: stop horses from being thrown out to eke a living on the roadside or worse, asked to continue racing when injuries beg for retirement. Now, the horses have a place to go for a secured future. VICCTRE is proud to have helped fill this void and will carry on to achieve each level of its mission for the community.
Of course, VICCTRE knows there are unique horseowners in the islands who always try their best to find proper retirement. On island the options to pasture are scarce and we provide a safe journey for those who need help to adoption facilities in the States. So far, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has received six of our V.I. geldings and Habitat for Horses in Jacksonville, Florida has assisted in the placement of 7 wonderful retired Thoroughbreds all from the USVI. Many, many thanks to these operations who opened their hearts and gates to these precious Virgin Islands racers.
Celebrating its two year anniversary being located at the St. Thomas Dairies, VICCTRE feels confident to expand in community outreach services that will include educational programs along with its full retirement, rescue and rehabilitation services.
Wish us luck! Watch for updates on our growth! Become a partner in this mission by sponsoring a horse! Help if you can as we help the horses of the Virgin Islands.
